The most important possession of any cowboy was his horse and saddle. Horses were so important that horse stealing was considered a hanging offense! The Indians lent another important chapter to the history of horses in the West. Horses and Indians seemed to possess a certain affinity for each other. Instead of dominating them with spurs and whips, the Indian reversed the theory and tried something totally new – training the horse with kindness. Beyond dispute, this magnificent and beloved creature is the single, most important element of the enduring spirit of the American West.
